University of Minnesota Honors Spanlink CEO with Outstanding Achievement Award

Minneapolis, Minn. – June 3, 2008 –The Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota, upon recommendation of the Institute of Technology and the All-University Honors Committee, recently presented Brett Shockley, Spanlink CEO, president and cofounder, with its 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award. The award honored Shockley as an individual who has attained unusual distinction and demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership in his chosen profession on a community, state, national and international level.

 
Outstanding Achievement Awards are the highest honor granted to University alumni. Specifically, this award recognizes Shockley as a “trailblazing entrepreneur whose ability to identify a market need and introduce influential, integrated communications solutions has revolutionized the telecommunications industry.”
 
“The Department of Mechanical Engineering and the University of Minnesota are extremely proud of Shockley’s many notable accomplishments,” said James W. Ramsey, Professor and Acting Department Head, University of Minnesota. “Shockley is a devoted alumnus whose mentorship of students and strong support for the state’s technology community has helped stimulate Minnesota’s technological expansion.”
 
Shockley holds a patent for a telecommunications device and has recently received several prestigious awards, including the Tekne Leadership Award, Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the Finance and Commerce Innovator of the Year Award.
 
A native to Minnesota, Shockley holds a MBA from the Carlson School of Management and a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota.
 
Shockley’s career includes activities spanning the areas of management, engineering and marketing. His telecommunications career began in 1982 as a product manager at ADC. In 1988, Shockley, along with two partners, founded Spanlink Communications. Shockley was instrumental in taking Spanlink from a $3,000 initial capital investment to an IPO, and then in 2000 taking the company private and selling a minority interest to Cisco Systems. Today, Shockley continues to lead Spanlink in delivering business communications technologies that enhance human interaction, employee productivity and the customer experience.
